A large Great White Shark forced the closure of several beaches in the west Australian city of Perth, local media reported on Thursday (May 1).
The five-metre shark was sighted off the Floreat Groyne at City Beach in the morning hours, local media said, quoting Surf Life Saving Western Australia (WA).
It is believed the shark was attracted by a six-metre whale that was spotted near City Beach earlier on Thursday.
A witness saw the shark swimming near the whale, both heading north.
“First of all, I saw the whale, and then I could see something following it. And then people were saying, ‘what’s pursuing it?’. And yeah, then it was clear, it was a shark,” an unidentified witness said.
“Quite close to the shore and it was enormous, the shark, huge,” said another witness.
Her friend agreed.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. It was huge,” she said.
Surf Life Saving WA told local media that it tracked the shark as it headed north.
While City Beach was reopened later on Thursday, but several other beaches remain closed.
