Science Explains Why We Believe In Ghosts

Those who claim to have witnessed paranormal activity may have experienced nothing more than their brain playing tricks on them.

Throughout time, people have believed in the supernatural world. What actually scared them may have been nothing more than their own brain.

Different psychologists believe that science can provide an explanation behind alleged paranormal activity.

According to Chris French, head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at the University of London, any time someone thinks they feel an unearthly presence, it’s purely psychological.

While many people have had spooky, goose-bump inducing experiences, French attributes this to the power of suggestion.

For example, if one person thinks they hear footsteps in a reportedly haunted house, everyone is likely to believe they heard footsteps too.

When children believe they’ve seen a ghost, it’s due to their developing cognitive abilities. They tend to confuse reality and fantasy, lending to their belief in otherworldly creatures.

French even suggests that paranormal experiences can be artificially manufactured during brain surgery. Near-death experiences are said to be explained by neuroscience.

Regardless of whether science can prove or disprove that supernatural beings exist, ghosts and spirits are a part of cultures around the world. What do you believe?
