Second nurse gets Ebola, flies on Frontier Airlines flight from Ohio to Texas

A second nurse who has contracted Ebola after treating deceased Ebola patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, flew on a commercial flight from Cleveland to Dallas after developing a slight fever. According to the director of the CDC, Dr. Tom Friedan, Amber Joy vinson should not have been flying.

Vinson flew to Cleveland on Oct. 10 to plan a wedding, according to multiple reports, even though she was being monitored for signs of Ebola.

CDC spokesman David Daigle said Vinson contacted the CDC before boarding her flight back to Dallas. Vinson had been regularly monitoring herself for symptoms of Ebola, and reported her temperature had risen to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (37.5 degrees Celsius) before she boarded the return flight to Dallas on Oct. 13. However, it is unclear why she was still allowed to board the plane.

“She should not have been on that plane,” Frieden said.

The plane used on Frontier Airlines Flight 1143, which Vinson took, went on to operate a flight back to Cleveland, and also roundtrip flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. A Frontier Airlines statement said that the plane was completely cleaned at least twice according to routine protocol. However, the aircraft has since been removed from operation.

Meanwhile, the CDC is trying to track down the 132 people who were on the plane with Vinson. Officials plan to interview the passengers and continue to monitor them for symptoms of Ebola.

Vinson has been transferred to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, government officials say. Emory has successfully treated two people who contracted Ebola in West Africa and were flown back to the United States.
