Mysterious Underground City

A mysterious underground city named Derinkuyu 16 floors deep was used to hide from something, perhaps ancient aliens, has been discovered in Turkey in this documentary. It has been featured on the history channel.

An ancient underground city exists in Turkey.

As far back as three or four thousand years ago, early inhabitants of the region now known as Cappadocia in central Turkey, discovered that the rock of the mountainous region was composed of soft volcanic ash, and they were able to carve out small caves in which to hide from invaders.

Over the centuries, the small caves were eventually expanded into much larger living, working and storage spaces and interconnected with others, eventually forming an underground city at least eight levels deep capable of accomodating over twenty thousand people, their livestock, food, water, and all the necessities of a busy, thriving city, safely sealed away from foreign attackers and religious prosecution.

A complex network of ventilation shafts provided fresh air to the deepest rooms, and water wells were replenished by an underground river.

Over one hundred unique entrances at the surface could be sealed off by rolling massive mill stones across the openings.

The city had a school and a marketplace, several temples, wineries and barns, and deep corridors several miles long connecting to other underground cities in the area.

The last known inhabitants sealed up the city about a century ago, and the city was forgotten.

Until 1963, a man renovating his home knocked down a wall to discover a secret room with a passageway leading into the amazing city. Archaelogists think the city might go as far as eighteeen levels deep, and they’ve opened up half of the known city to tourism.

These cities were carved thousands of years ago….but why?…was it just to avoid invaders?…or was it something else?
