A 44-year-old woman shot and killed four and injured two at an American Indian tribal headquarters in California on Thursday.
The shooter was identified as Sherrie Rhoades, also known as Sherrie Lash, a former leader of the Cedarville Rancheria. She was attending a meeting about evicting her and her son from the tribe at the Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office and Community Center in Alturas, California.
At around 3:30 p.m., Rhoades opened fire and killed four people. According to CBS Sacramento, she was using at least one semi-automatic handgun. During the shooting rampage, one person ran for the door but was again shot by Rhoades.
After running out of ammunition, Rhoades grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and stabbed another person.
One attendee, covered in victims’ blood, escaped the building and alarmed police at the Alturas police station.
Four people, a 19-year-old woman, a 45-year-old woman, a 30-year-old man and a 50-year-old man, were killed. One of the victims was the tribe’s leader. Two other people were critically injured and airlifted to a hospital outside Alturas. No further details concerning their conditions have been released.
Rhoades is now in custody in the Modoc County jail. The Cedarville Rancheria, which has 35 members, is a federally recognized tribe of the Northern Paiute people.
