SpaceX Falcon rocket brings first 3D printer into space

SpaceX has launched cargo ship Falcon 9 v1.1 into orbit on Sunday in the second Dragon mission of 2014 to resupply the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission, supposed to be carried on Saturday, was postponed due to bad weather conditions. According to Reuters, this is the fourth mission under SpaceX 12-flight $1.6 billion NASA contract for cargo delivery services.

Spaceship Falcon 9 v1.1, a 63-meter tall booster, has a pressurised capsule and an unpressurised trunk section.

According to NASA, the pressurised capsule returns to Earth, while the unpressurised trunk section is jettisoned prior to reentry and will be destroyed when it enters the Earth’s atmosphere.

The pressurised section is carrying 2,300 kilograms of supplies, including food and beverage, and equipment including lithium batteries and a 3D printer, which are destined to the six-member crew at the International Space Station.

The 3D printer, developed by Made In Space, will also mark the first 3D printer sent out to the space, which allows astronauts to print out spare parts on the spot.

Falcon 9 v1.1 is scheduled to arrive at the ISS early Tuesday.

According to AFP, company SpaceX, which is run by Internet mogul Elon Musk, became the first one to send a spacecraft to the ISS.
