Incredible video captured by an Austin, Texas Police Department squad car last year shows the moment officer Shane Cunningham fired 15 rounds through a car’s windshield as the robbery suspect inside rammed Cunningham’s car in an attempt to escape the law.
The suspect, Miguel Micias, 48, was caught stealing items from a North Austin business with another man by Austin police officer Cunningham. When Micias attempted to escape, Cunningham rammed his patrol car into the front of Micias’ 1994 Acura, stopping him. Unwilling to surrender, Micas rammed head-on into Cunningham’s car, pushing it backward until it hit a tree. Cunningham then fired 15 rounds at Micias through the glass, striking him five times, but not fatally.
Travis County prosecutors said Macias used his car as a deadly weapon to harm Cunningham. Macias’ defense lawyers argued he had only wanted to escape and had no intention to hurt the officer, who opened fire without giving the two men a chance to surrender.
Macias was sentenced to 32 years in prison for aggravated assault on a public servant.
