An Emirati woman was arrested on Thursday in connection with the stabbing of an American teacher in an Abu Dhabi mall and planting a makeshift bomb outside the home of an American doctor.
Police said the suspect was 38-year-old Dalal al Hashemi, a United Arab Emirates citizen originally from Yemen, according to ABC news. Police said she stabbed American teacher Ibolya Ryan to death in the bathroom of the Boutik Mall on Reem Island on December 1.
The suspect then allegedly placed a makeshift bomb outside the home of a 46-year-old Egyptian-American doctor in the waterfront Corniche area after, the New York Post reported.
One of the doctor’s sons noticed the bomb and informed the family. A bomb disposal unit later defused the device, which included a small gas cylinder, a lighter, glue and nails, CBS news reported.
The suspect reportedly had targeted the two Americans based solely on their nationality.
ABC news reported that the woman’s home was described as a “base of operations” by police and that other people were arrested at her house. It was not clear how they were connected to the attacks or what groups she was affiliated with.
