$1 birth control injection for women in 69 developing countries could slash unwanted pregnancies

A US$1 contraceptive injection will be made available to women in 69 of the world’s poorest countries thanks to an agreement between the Gates Foundation, drug company Pfizer, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.

The contraceptive injection, known as the Sayana Press, comes prepackaged with a syringe. The shots can be administered without extensive training, making Sayana Press an ideal birth control option for rural areas in developing countries.

Sayana Press contains a dose of synthetic progesterone known as depot medroxyprogesterone acetate that suppresses ovulation for a period of three months.

Burkina Faso is the first country to begin the Sayana Press pilot program launched by an organization known as Path. Niger, Senegal and Uganda are expected to begin using Sayana Press soon.
